Mark Kindler: Translating passion into careerClick here to download article

JOHANNESBURG – October 15, 2010 – Intelligence, mobility and fleet management solutions provider, ST Group, has announced the appointment of Mark Kindler as a director of the organisation. His unyielding passion for geography, especially social geography and demographics, has spurred him to examine the commercial application of geographic intelligence systems (GIS) in industries such as insurance, financial services, media and publications, retail, the public sector, as well as telecommunications.

After working as a business intelligence manager at an outsource partner for multi-channel commerce and relationship marketing, Kindler joined ST Group as an account manager, before joining the technical team where he was responsible for training, desktop technical support, spatial data products and consulting. Gradually, his role progressed into one that involved project management and geographic business analysis and he cemented his enthusiasm for the business in his almost eight years of employment at ST Group.

He says, “Being involved and responsible for the documentation and development cycle from initially identifying companies’ business needs, designing and architecting a best-fit solution, which is quickly adopted due to an ease-of-use approach, and ensuring that the project is developed and implemented on time, is an absolute enjoyment. There is nothing more rewarding than transforming a client’s requirements into practical, functional, workable and strategic easy-to-use GIS solutions that are benchmarked for performance against key business objectives, and are well received.”

Chief technical officer at ST Group, Jeff Connacher, says that Kindler is a results driven individual, combining exceptional, practical judgment with skills in architecting and designing GIS solutions across the enterprise. “He will be responsible for growing our business revenue by selling our enterprise, services and products in the southern African market. We have identified much room for growth in the marketplace and I know that Mark is the right person with the right energy to make it happen.”

Kindler says that the invention and quick adoption of new business intelligence (BI) and location business intelligence (LBI) systems within an ever evolving technological society where many offerings are free and open source, opens the doors to fresh ideas and fresh thinking of new features, applications, functions and new commercial and affordable products.

This innovative environment will be the key to continuing ST Group’s rapid growth and expansion, as well as enabling the growth of GIS- and LBI-adoption in organisations across the continent, believes Kindler. “Immense success in GIS enterprise deployments has been achieved through ST Group at Vodacom, Neotel, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, IJS, the, National Home Builders Registration Council and Nedbank. With the maturity in telecommunications sector across Africa, I see endless opportunity on the continent”.

He adds that location is a critical, and often overlooked, aspect of business planning and processes and that most organisations have a need for location in decision making. “Organisations market, plan, assign assets, track resources, analyse sales and manage services by geography. I believe that there is scope for a strong symbiosis between BI and LBI and foresee the opportunity to unite these two disciplines academically and commercially. Location is, and will remain, a key business driver for most businesses.”

Kindler holds an honours degree in geography and environmental management from the Rand Afrikaans University.
